The comeback of "The Comeback", the cult TV series with Lisa Kudrow, returned after 9 years of a possible hiatus for an 8-episode run. After watching the season finale, it's clear to me after all these years that Kudrow is not only underappreciated as an actress, but as a writer as well.
I have always watched "Friends" over and over again. I had not appreciated "Web Therapy" in the past, but I started dealing with this kind of loose improvisation, thus respecting her ability to offer something fresh as far as the tradition of the american television format is concerned. But this is something completely different. It comes out of the blue, ringing bells and giving you food for thought with every word, every catchphrase, every directorial detail and every performing manipulation of its cast.
Michael Patrick King (Sex And The City, 2 Broke Girls) and Kudrow are responsible for the whole project, along with the director John Riggi (30 Rock). "The Comeback" is a funny and at the same time a ruthless satire of the television showbiz. It combines every show you have loved or have loved to hate in the past - from pure comedy shows like "30 Rock" to reality garbage like "Desperate Housewives" and from smart mockumentaries/political satires like "Parks and Recreation" to dramedy performances like "Nurse Jackie" and "Girls". Only that Kudrow and King were pioneers, 9 years ago.
The distinctive smartness of the script is not upfront. You cannot take it for granted, sometimes you cannot get it at all if you don't watch the next scene or the next episode. It's all about the characters' development and the ethical codes they have to struggle for in their everyday lives. Kudrow gives the best performance of the year (drama or comedy) and not only she deserves the Emmy her character finally wins in the story, but also every other award in this or the next year's ceremonies.
Though the show drew an average of 1.4 million viewers (poor percentage), we can hope for a third season and some Emmy nominations to boost the series' hype. Cause, let's be honest, this is probably the best thing you can watch on TV right now.
